Ann Austin Named 2024 Christmas Spirit Award Winner

The Downtown Clayton Christmas Committee is proud to announce Ann Austin, affectionately known as “Ms. Ann,” as the recipient of the 2024 Christmas Spirit Award. A beloved figure in the community, Ms. Ann’s contributions over the past 40 years have left an indelible mark on Clayton.

“I was very much surprised,” said Ms. Ann. “A lot of my (dancers’) mothers recognized me, and they had been my former students. Now, I’m teaching their children, and it was really exciting.”

As the founder and operator of the Clayton School of Dance, Ms. Ann has been a cornerstone of the Town’s culture and a source of joy and creativity for generations. Her studio is renowned for its vibrant holiday celebrations, from Halloween parties to heartwarming Christmas events. The annual Clayton Christmas Parade has seldom occurred without a dazzling entry from the Clayton School of Dance, expertly choreographed by Ms. Ann herself.

“Clayton is my home,” said Ms. Ann “It was the beginning of my business in 1982. I’ve had a great following, and I just love Johnston County. I grew up here, and I’m so glad that I could continue to have my business here.”

Beyond her work at the dance studio, Ms. Ann is a dedicated member of First Baptist Church Clayton, where she serves in numerous roles, including Deacon and choir member. She also mentors middle and high school girls through the church’s Acteens program, teaching them to live a life of service and faith.

“Ms. Ann is the embodiment of selflessness,” said Audrey Harrell, a former student and current dance mom. “She leaves a little sparkle everywhere she goes.”

Her impact extends beyond dance and faith. During the summer, Ms. Ann hosts her beloved Manners Camp, teaching boys and girls the timeless art of Southern etiquette. From writing thank-you notes to setting a formal table, Ms. Ann ensures each child leaves with practical skills and cherished memories.

“Ann is magic,” said Stephanie Parker, a former student. “She builds confidence and leadership among countless girls, leaving a permanent, meaningful mark on their lives. We show up for her because she always showed up for us.”

Ms. Ann’s influence is woven into the fabric of Clayton. Former students often return to perform at her anniversary recitals, a testament to the lasting impact she has on their lives. She has also shared her creative talents through her interior design business, The Blair House, and her community spirit through participation in events like the Tree Lighting and Harvest Festival.

“It’s great to have all these generations of students I’ve taught and supported me through the years, and they’re giving to me – I feel like – more than I’ve given to them,” said Ms. Ann.

Known for her humility and unwavering dedication, Ms. Ann has become a role model not just for her dancers but for the entire town. She consistently places others before herself, whether by cheering on her students, serving her church, or beautifying Clayton with her thoughtful designs.

“Ann Austin exemplifies the spirit of Christmas and the heart of Clayton,” said the Downtown Clayton Christmas Committee member Amy Shearin. “She makes our community a better place to live, work, and play.”

Congratulations to Ms. Ann Austin, a true Clayton icon and the 2024 Christmas Spirit Award winner! Ms. Ann will receive her recognition during the 34th annual Downtown Clayton Christmas Village and Tree Lighting, starting 5 p.m., Thursday, December 5 along Main Street. Join us as Ms. Ann helps flip the switch to light up the Town and kick off the holiday festivities in our community.
