Clayton Builds Lasting Opportunities through Economic Leadership
After leading the Town of Clayton’s Economic Development Department for several months, Joseph Stallings reflects on his commitment to supporting local businesses and helping residents build a foundation for success.
Economic Development Week, which runs May 12-16, highlights the importance of economic strategies in creating vibrant, sustainable places. For Clayton, it is a chance to showcase Stallings and his contributions to the Town’s ongoing improvements.
Clayton’s location within the Research Triangle region has led to growing interest from businesses, many of which recognize the advantages of Clayton’s sense of community and amenities, including parks, job opportunities, and services that help make this a place to call home.
“Our Town is in a unique position to continue attracting businesses that align with our values and support a high quality of life for everyone,” added Stallings.
Stallings works to bring new businesses to Clayton while supporting those already here, focusing on both recruitment and retention. His goal is to build a strong and well-rounded local economy that meets the needs of the community.
One example is the revitalization of the Olde Town Hall. This project preserves a piece of downtown history while creating space for new business opportunities and community activity, helping support Clayton’s economic vision through both innovation and preservation.
This kind of thoughtful work reflects Stallings’ nearly 15 years of experience in economic development at the town and county level, along with a background in the railroad industry. He is committed to Clayton’s future and values the relationships he is building.
“Economic development is about creating long-term stability,” Stallings said. “It helps families and businesses grow together. Whether it is a local shop or a larger employer, every business plays a role in our success.”
Stallings is also building partnerships with local schools and organizations to support workforce development for future generations. He recently joined the Clayton Rotary Club and is actively involved in local service.
“I want to help ensure that the next generation has the tools they need to succeed,” he said. “That means offering resources and creating pathways for young people to succeed right here in Clayton.”
