Clayton Carries the Torch & Steps Up for Special Olympics

With sneakers laced and donning special attire, the Clayton Police Department hit the streets of downtown Clayton on Friday, May 30, for the 2025 Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. Officers, residents, and supporters came together not just for a morning jog but for a powerful cause: showing love and support for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics North Carolina.

The run began and ended at the Clayton Police Department on East Second Street. Participants followed a designated route through the heart of the downtown area, passing along Main Street and South Robertson Street before looping back to the department headquarters. With lights flashing and sirens sounding, police vehicles escorted runners to ensure safety and manage brief traffic closures along the way.

To participate in the run, all individuals wore the official 2025 Torch Run shirt, available on-site for $25. Hats were also available for $30. All proceeds directly benefited Special Olympics North Carolina, which empowers athletes across the state through year-round sports training and competition.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising campaign for Special Olympics. Known as the “Guardians of the Flame,” law enforcement officers carry the Flame of Hope into the Opening Ceremonies of Special Olympics events. In North Carolina alone, nearly 2,000 officers participate in the campaign annually, helping to raise more than $33 million to date.

The Clayton Police Department is proud to be part of this global movement that champions acceptance, celebrates abilities, and brings people together. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this meaningful tradition!
