Clayton Fire Department’s Meet Us Monthly Feature: September 2024
It is the first Monday of September, which means we are recognizing another valued member of our team during #MeetUsMonthly.
Battalion Chief Andrew Shaw is just shy of observing his 20-year anniversary with the Clayton Fire Department, accepting a position back in 2005. Currently, he is responsible for running calls, scheduling crews, and looking after local buildings and grounds.
A native of the area, Shaw is a graduate of Clayton High School. He has an associate degree from Johnston Community College and a stretch where he worked part-time for the Cleveland Community Fire Department and full-time with the Town of Clayton simultaneously.
Throughout his tenure, Shaw recalls one incident that really struck a chord with him. It is the scene of a single-engine plane crash into McCall’s BBQ and Seafood Restaurant off US Highway 70 West, which took place in September 2007. While the pilot died and the building sustained damage, Shaw says there were no reports of additional injuries.
Safety continues to be at the forefront of the fire department, so Shaw likes to share a friendly public service announcement (PSA) with residents: “Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives, so make sure yours are working.”
During his downtime, Shaw enjoys hunting and fishing. He also has a passion for building houses after getting his contracting license several years ago. One of Shaw’s current projects is close to his heart, building a patio/pavilion at his home in McGee’s Crossroads.
