Clayton Fire Reminds Everyone to Spring into Action & Safeguard Home
Spring is almost here, and with it comes more daylight and warmer nights. As residents “spring forward” for Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m., Sunday, March 9, it’s the perfect opportunity to reset not just clocks but also fire safety routines. A simple time change serves as a helpful reminder to check safety equipment and prepare for the season ahead.
The Clayton Fire Department says now is the time to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Pressing the test button confirms they’re working properly, providing the first line of defense against fire and carbon monoxide dangers. Batteries should also be replaced if they haven’t been changed recently. Even if alarms function, fresh batteries are important for continued protection. The National Fire Protection Association reports working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%.
“The safety of your family isn’t something you should leave to chance,” said Captain Bryan Belvin, Community Risk Reduction Specialist. “The steps you take today are the moments that make a real difference when seconds count. It’s about protecting what matters most.”
Fire extinguishers should also be checked for expiration dates and charge levels. Belvin suggests looking for any signs of damage, corrosion, or a missing pin, and making sure the pressure gauge is in the green zone. In an emergency, an extinguisher is only useful if it’s in working order and easily accessible.
Families should also review fire escape plans, practicing exit routes and establishing a safe meeting spot outside. Every household member should know at least two ways out of each room and how to exit quickly in low visibility, according to Belvin. Including pets in these plans helps prevent confusion and delays, increasing their chances of safety too.
“We can all be heroes in our own homes,” added Belvin. “The Clayton Fire Department is here to help, but the real power to protect your family lies with you. Preparing today – from testing alarms to planning your escape – is a choice you make to make sure your loved ones are ready for whatever comes next.”
