Clayton Fire’s Rescue Truck Serves as a Toolbox on Wheels

The rescue truck stands apart from every other fire apparatus in the Clayton Fire Department fleet. Fire Captain Cory Beard calls it the department’s “toolbox on wheels,” designed specifically for technical rescue operations. Unlike the fire engine, which carries water and hoses for firefighting, or the ladder truck, which is equipped with an aerial ladder for reaching high places, the rescue truck carries specialized tools for emergencies where lives depend on precision and expertise.
“It’s packed with equipment for vehicle extrication, rope rescues, and tight-space emergencies,” said Beard. The rescue truck also plays a broader role beyond technical rescues. It provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) care and carries tools for forcible entry, ground ladders for search and rescue, and ventilation equipment for structure fires.
In addition, it serves as the department’s primary unit for technical rescue operations with hydraulic cutters and spreaders to pry open wrecked vehicles, rope systems for high-angle rescues, and gear for confined space and trench emergencies. This carefully arranged setup allows the team to manage complex emergencies that require specialized knowledge and skill.
Serving as Johnston County’s technical rescue provider, Clayton Fire Department responds to some of the area’s most challenging emergencies, from swiftwater rescues to incidents involving agricultural machinery. “Our rescue truck and team are equipped and trained to handle these tough situations, providing a critical service to the community,” emphasized Beard.
The truck’s equipment goes beyond firefighting needs. In vehicle accidents, for example, the rescue crew uses hydraulic tools to dismantle damaged cars and free trapped victims safely. “Modern vehicles, especially electric and hybrid models, have complex electrical systems and airbags that demand special care during rescues,” explained Beard. “The rescue truck carries everything necessary to meet those challenges safely.”
Firefighters inspect the rescue truck daily to make sure every tool is in place and ready for action. Custom compartments organize the gear so the crew can quickly access what is needed during emergencies, saving valuable time.
Training is essential when preparing for rescue calls. Every firefighter assigned to the rescue truck holds certifications in various technical rescue specialties. Continuous training focuses on skills like rope rescue, trench rescue, and confined space operations. The team also trains with neighboring departments to coordinate responses for large or complex incidents.
Typically, four firefighters respond to each call on the rescue truck. This staffing level helps maintain safety and efficiency, especially at vehicle accident scenes, which are among the most hazardous emergencies due to passing traffic and unstable wreckage. “Having enough trained personnel allows us to work quickly and safely to save lives,” said Beard.
When dispatched, the crew aims to leave the station within 90 seconds. Upon arrival, they collaborate closely with other fire apparatus. The fire engine stabilizes vehicles while the rescue team uses its specialized tools to carefully extricate trapped individuals.
The current rescue truck, in service since November 2015, replaced an older, used vehicle and was purpose-built to carry the extensive equipment required for modern technical rescues. “This truck is a huge benefit for the Town and the people we serve,” said Beard. “It allows us to meet important safety standards and be ready for any kind of emergency.”
For the Town of Clayton, having a dedicated rescue truck means faster, more effective responses to emergencies that involve complex rescues. “Our rescue truck and team give the community peace of mind knowing that when they’re in a tough situation, specialized help is just minutes away,” concluded Beard.
