Engineering the Path Forward for Clayton’s Communities and Infrastructure
As Clayton moves forward, the Engineering Department plays a key role in ensuring that new projects meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
Engineering technicians are in the field every day, checking that new projects follow local, state, and federal rules. “We’re out here looking at roads being paved, utilities going in, and stormwater systems being installed,” explained Engineering Technician Michael Worner. “Our job is to make sure everything is built correctly and works the way it should for the community.”
New projects bring homes, businesses, and public infrastructure to the Town. While each project is unique, the team’s goal remains the same – making sure construction follows best practices and is designed to meet Clayton’s long-term needs.
“We focus on making sure projects are built to a high standard,” Worner added. “Our inspections help determine that water and sewer systems work properly, that roads and sidewalks are safe, and that everything works as planned when it’s done.”
Each day is a balance of office work and fieldwork. Mornings often begin with reviewing construction plans and permits while the rest of the day is spent inspecting active sites, solving problems, and working with contractors. “One day we’re looking at water lines. The next day, it’s stormwater management or road paving,” Worner said. “We also review plans to make certain everything is in place before construction even begins.” Some projects require night work, especially when utilities need to be connected with minimal disruption to residents.
One of the best parts of the job is seeing a project through from start to finish. “I’ve worked in construction for 30 years, and it’s always exciting to see an area change over time,” Worner shared. While the completion of projects can span from months to years, the team works hard to keep things on track and maintain quality at every step.
Residents often have questions about ongoing projects, and the Engineering Department values being open with the community. While job sites stay active for safety reasons, community members are always welcome to ask questions and learn more about the process. “We’re always happy to provide information about how things work and what to expect,” said Worner.
The Engineering Department is committed to maintaining the Town’s infrastructure and supporting thoughtful improvements. Its hard work helps reaffirm each project is built to last, building a strong foundation for Clayton’s future. To learn more about the Engineering Department, visit townofclaytonnc.org.
