Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library “Boo-sts” Its Collection with Halloween Costumes

Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is expanding its collection in an unexpected way. Typically known for its books, CDs, and DVDs, it’s currently accepting donations for the Halloween Costume Swap, offering a chance for families to participate in the holiday without the usual costs.

Now through Wednesday, October 16, staff are collecting new or gently-used costumes. Members of the community can drop off cleaned costumes at the library, located at 100 South Church Street, during regular hours of operation from Monday through Saturday.

There’s no limit to the number of costumes a person can donate. The library is accepting all sizes and ages, from infant to teen, as well as Halloween masks, costume accessories, candy buckets, and treat bags. Please avoid donating stained or torn items.

“We want every child to experience the magic of Halloween, regardless of their family’s financial situation,” said Interim Library Director Mel Poole. “For some, the joy of dressing up, trick-or-treating, and embodying their favorite character for a night is out of reach because costumes don’t fit into the family budget. By removing this cost barrier, we’re ensuring that all children can participate and enjoy the holiday.”

Donations will be available for families to browse during the Halloween Costume Swap, taking place from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday, October 17 at the library. Children and teens can try on and select one costume each, making it a special opportunity for some spooktacular fun.

“Libraries serve the community in so many ways beyond books,” added Poole. “Our goal is to meet the needs of families, whether it’s through access to educational resources or creative initiatives, like the Halloween Costume Swap. We want people to feel seen and supported, and we’re proud to utilize the library as a space that fosters both learning and community connection.”
