Time to Check Your Smoke Detectors
As we set our clocks back one hour at 2 a.m., Sunday, November 3, to end Daylight Saving Time, the Clayton Fire Department has a friendly reminder: this is a perfect time to check your smoke detectors. While we all enjoy the extra hour of sleep, it’s also a great opportunity to help keep our homes safe by testing and maintaining these important devices.
Smoke detectors are our first line of defense against fire, alerting us early, so we can get to safety. Checking your smoke detectors twice a year – when you change your clocks – is an easy way to make sure they’re ready to work when needed. Test each alarm by pressing the button and replacing the batteries if they’re low. It’s a small action that could save lives.
The Clayton Fire Department recommends replacing smoke detectors every 10 years. Dust, age, and even pet fur can reduce their effectiveness over time. So, as you turn back the clock this season, take a moment to check, clean, and replace your smoke detectors if needed.
