Town of Clayton Supplies Back-to-School Resources & Safety Tips

As students and parents close the books on the first day of school, the Town of Clayton has some grade-A tips to keep everyone on track and ensure a smooth transition into the new academic year.

“To promote a safe environment around schools, the Clayton Police Department is reminding drivers to be extra cautious in school zones,” said Communication Director Nathanael Shelton. Staff emphasize speed limits are lowered when signs are flashing or during posted times, and drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks where foot traffic is heavy and sudden stops may occur.

It’s also important to know when to stop for a school bus. All traffic must stop on two-lane roads, two-lane roads with a center turning lane, and four-lane roads without a median. On divided highways with a median and roads with four or more lanes and a center turning lane, only traffic behind the bus is required to stop.

When drivers see yellow flashing lights on a school bus, the Clayton Police Department says it signals the bus is about to stop. If red lights are flashing and stop arms are extended, the bus is stopped, and children are getting on or off. All vehicles must then come to a complete stop and wait until the bus moves again.

When stopping for a school bus, staff urge drivers to give children enough room to safely enter and exit the bus, citing the area within 10 feet of a school bus is considered the most dangerous.

“In addition to safety, the Town of Clayton is focused on supporting students by providing access to valuable educational resources,” said Shelton. Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library offers a wide range of databases through NC Live to help students excel outside the classroom.
