Human Resources Guides Employees Through Open Enrollment in Clayton

Fall marks a season of important choices for Town employees as they review benefit options and plan for the year ahead. These decisions go beyond the workplace, shaping the health and well-being of entire families.

Guiding employees through these moments is the work of the Town’s Human Resources (HR) Department. Clayton is proud to recognize this team on Human Resources Professionals Day, September 26. The department plays an important role in connecting employees with the tools, benefits, and support they need to succeed both at work and at home.

That responsibility takes on added weight this year as the state health care plan introduces higher deductibles, revised coverage options, and new incentive programs. HR is prepared to help employees understand these changes and how they may affect their households.

Carrying out that work daily is Human Resources Analyst Nairoby Cornwall. In addition to navigating benefit questions, she manages billing, orientations, and leave administration – all while serving as a trusted resource for both new and long-time employees.

“It is not always about pushing papers or checking boxes,” said Cornwall. “I always look at the person first. How can we help them navigate their situation in the best way?”

She described her department as a place where employees can turn for advice and support while addressing challenging topics.

“Anytime I meet with an employee, I want them to feel heard,” explained Cornwall. “Listening helps us find solutions that may not be obvious at first.”

That advocacy covers more than benefits. Whether an employee is moving from part-time to full-time, planning a leave of absence, or starting their first day with the Town, HR works to make the transition smooth.

The department also helps employees take full advantage of programs designed to support their health. Cornwall encourages staff not to overlook wellness benefits tied to routine care.

“Simple steps like scheduling a physical or receiving a vaccination can put money back in your pocket,” she said.

HR is at the heart of employee support, now serving nearly twice as many staff members as when Cornwall started. When she began working in Clayton four years ago, the Town had around 200 employees. Today, nearly 400 staff members rely on HR for guidance.

“We are here to help. If I do not know the answer, I will find it. Our purpose is to serve employees,” said Cornwall.

This commitment is more than answering questions; HR also works to clarify misconceptions about the profession while keeping employees at the center of everything they do.

“Some people think HR is not on the employee’s side,” said Cornwall. “But we are here to add value to your work experience from the moment you apply to the day you enroll in benefits, and I feel proud to be part of a department that truly advocates for employees.”
